SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Health has updated its COVID-19 vaccination guidance and extended a statewide standing order allowing eligible people to receive the 2026–2027 vaccines without an individual prescription.
According to the department, providers may vaccinate people requesting the updated vaccine under NMDOH guidelines, despite federal approvals focused on specific high-risk groups.
The department says vaccination is especially important for adults age 65 and older, people at increased risk of severe COVID-19, and those who have never been vaccinated. It also recommends vaccination during pregnancy to help protect both the pregnant person and the infant after birth.
NMDOH Chief Medical Officer Dr. Miranda Durham said COVID-19 vaccines remain important tools for preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death.
The New Mexico Health Care Authority says Medicaid will cover the full cost of COVID-19 vaccines for enrolled individuals.
