SUNLAND PARK, N.M. — Construction is officially underway on the new Casa de Peregrinos satellite food pantry in Sunland Park, a project designed to bring fresh groceries and reliable food assistance directly to families in southern Doña Ana County.
Casa de Peregrinos, one of the region’s longest‑serving hunger‑relief organizations, is expanding its reach through a network of satellite pantries in Hatch, Chaparral, and Sunland Park. The new facility will help reduce long travel times for residents who currently drive to Las Cruces for food assistance.
The Sunland Park pantry is being built through a partnership between the City of Sunland Park and Casa de Peregrinos. Funding for the project comes from state and local capital outlay, along with a recent allocation from the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration’s Capital Development Program. The combined funding covers construction of the new building, site preparation, and the infrastructure needed for indoor and drive‑through food distribution.
Once completed, Casa de Peregrinos will operate the pantry under a long‑term agreement with the city. The organization distributes food baskets valued at more than $250 each, containing fresh produce, dairy, meats, and pantry staples. The Sunland Park location is expected to serve thousands of residents each month, providing a dependable source of nutrition for families facing food insecurity.
City officials say the project will strengthen local access to food assistance and support households experiencing economic hardship. Construction is expected to continue through next year, with the pantry opening once the facility is fully equipped and staffed.
