LAS CRUCES — The City of Las Cruces celebrated a new public art installation on Thursday, July 30, with a ribbon-cutting for “Cultivating Community,” a vibrant mural now brightening the exterior of Fire Station 2.
Artist Faridi Buhaya transformed a blank wall into a colorful tribute to the history, culture, and community pride of the Chiva Town neighborhood. The project began as an effort to reduce graffiti and evolved into a meaningful collaboration through the City’s Public Art Program.
The event included remarks from artist Faridi Buhaya, Mayor Eric Enriquez, District 3 Councilor Michael Harris, and Quality of Life Director Carol Brey. Their partnership with Las Cruces Fire, Las Cruces Public Art, and neighborhood residents helped bring the mural to life.
City officials say the mural reflects Las Cruces’ ongoing investment in public art that represents local stories and strengthens community identity. The new installation is now open for the public to enjoy.
