LAS CRUCES — Doña Ana County is teaming up with the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services to provide hands-on help for veterans and certain surviving spouses seeking property tax relief later this month.

County officials announced they will host a Veterans Property Tax Assistance Event on Thursday, April 23, aimed at guiding eligible veterans and unmarried widows through the application process for several property tax exemptions available under New Mexico law.

The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the conference room of the Assessor’s Office at the Doña Ana County Government Center, located at 845 North Motel Boulevard in Las Cruces.

Staff members from both the Doña Ana County Assessor’s Office and the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services will be available to provide in-person assistance with applications and answer questions about eligibility requirements. Officials say the goal is to make sure veterans receive the benefits they have earned through military service.

Available exemptions include a standard $10,000 veterans’ property tax exemption, a percentage-based exemption for disabled veterans, and a permanent and total property tax waiver for those with qualifying service-connected disabilities.

Residents planning to attend are encouraged to bring documentation to verify eligibility. Required paperwork includes military discharge records such as a DD-214 form showing character of service, or equivalent discharge documentation from federal service agencies. Veterans seeking disability-related exemptions should also bring a VA Federal Award letter showing their service-connected disability rating.

Attendees will also need to provide proof of New Mexico residency, which can include a valid New Mexico driver’s license, a current voter registration card, or their most recent New Mexico income tax return.

Officials note that copies of discharge documents can be requested through the National Archives, while disability documentation can be obtained from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

For additional details about the event or eligibility requirements, residents can contact the Doña Ana County Assessor’s Office at 575-647-7400 or the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services at 505-827-6300.
