LAS CRUCES – A teenager has been arrested on a first-degree murder charge following a vehicle-pedestrian crash that resulted in the death of another juvenile Monday evening.
The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded shortly after 5:30 p.m. to the 3800 block of South Main Street following reports of a hit-and-run involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.
According to preliminary information from investigators, a group of teenagers had arranged to meet at the Dove Canyon Trailer Park following an apparent dispute.
Deputies said a verbal altercation occurred after the group met. As one teenager attempted to leave the area in a vehicle, another teenager reportedly stood in front of the vehicle.
Investigators allege the driver then struck the teenager with the vehicle.
The injured teen was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries and later died.
The teenage driver was taken into custody and booked on charges of first-degree murder with a depraved state of mind and aggravated battery, according to DASO.
Because those involved are juveniles, authorities are not releasing additional identifying information.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the Sheriff’s Office said no additional information is available at this time.
