LAS CRUCES — Doña Ana County officials have officially introduced the county’s first-ever Youth Commission, marking a significant step toward involving young people in local decision-making and civic engagement across the community.
The Doña Ana County Board of County Commissioners approved the creation of the Youth Commission in November 2025, establishing a formal advisory group designed to represent youth perspectives and strengthen communication between young residents and county leadership. The program was developed to provide students with hands-on experience in government while offering county officials insight into issues that directly affect young people.
County leaders say the Youth Commission will serve as a vital bridge between youth and the Board of County Commissioners, allowing members to share ideas, raise concerns, and report back to their peers about county initiatives and policies. Officials noted that the commission is intended to help shape a stronger future for Doña Ana County by encouraging civic participation and leadership development among the next generation.
The Youth Commission is expected to include students from across the county, representing diverse schools and communities. Members will participate in meetings, provide feedback on youth-related programs and services, and learn about the responsibilities and operations of local government.
County officials have described the initiative as an investment in the future of Doña Ana County, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that young residents have a voice in the decisions that impact their lives and communities.
