LAS CRUCES — Eastbound traffic on Highway 70 has reopened following a fatal rollover crash that temporarily shut down both lanes during the Tuesday morning commute.
Authorities reported the closure was lifted at approximately 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, restoring normal traffic flow between Sonoma Ranch Boulevard and Mesa Grande Boulevard after several hours of investigation and cleanup at the scene.
The crash occurred around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, 2026, along the eastbound lanes of Highway 70. Emergency responders initially closed both eastbound lanes and detoured traffic off the highway at Sonoma Ranch Boulevard while crews worked the scene.
Preliminary information from investigators indicates the driver of a pickup truck may have suffered a medical episode prior to the crash. The vehicle reportedly struck the cable barriers dividing the highway before colliding with another eastbound vehicle. Authorities confirmed there were no injuries reported in the second vehicle involved.
During the closure, law enforcement urged westbound drivers to remain attentive and avoid using cameras or slowing to observe the crash scene. Officials reported at least one additional westbound crash occurred in the area, believed to be linked to driver inattention while passing the incident.
The fatal crash remains under investigation by the New Mexico State Police.
