GILA – Families are invited to Lake Roberts this Saturday for two free outdoor events hosted by the Gila National Forest.
The Annual Aldo Leopold Kids Fishing Derby will run from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by an awards ceremony. The event coincides with New Mexico’s Free Fishing Day, meaning fishing fees will be waived for the day, though regular bag limits still apply.
The Forest Service says Lake Roberts will be stocked with retired Gila trout from the Mora National Fish Hatchery. The derby will also include hands-on fishing demonstrations, prizes, and opportunities for children and adults to learn more about fish and waterways in the Gila National Forest.
Children under 18 who register for the event will receive a free fishing rod, goodie bag, and hot dog lunch while supplies last.
Also on Saturday, the Gila National Forest will host a National Trails Day volunteer event from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will help maintain trails around Lake Roberts, with work expected to include clearing brush and helping improve trail conditions.
Volunteers are asked to bring water, sunscreen, and work gloves. Some loaner gear will be available.
Forest officials say visitors should expect possible traffic congestion around Lake Roberts during the events and are asked to watch for slowed or stopped vehicles.
Lake Roberts is located north of Silver City in the Gila National Forest.
