LAS CRUCES – The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for the Mesilla Valley and surrounding areas as dangerously hot temperatures settle across southern New Mexico this week.
The advisory remains in effect from noon until 9 p.m. Monday. A second Heat Advisory will be in effect from noon Tuesday through 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Forecasters say temperatures could reach as high as 108 degrees across portions of Doña Ana County, including Las Cruces, Mesilla, Hatch, Radium Springs, Sunland Park and surrounding communities.
The advisory warns that prolonged exposure to extreme heat may increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for those working outdoors, older adults, young children and individuals without access to air conditioning.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and limit strenuous outdoor activities to the cooler morning and evening hours whenever possible.
Officials also recommend taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments during outdoor work. Anyone experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion should be moved to a cool location immediately. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and requires calling 911.
The heat advisory covers portions of Doña Ana County as well as neighboring areas of Luna County, El Paso County and Hudspeth County.
