Investigators Rule Fairway Drive Explosion and Fire Accidental

LAS CRUCES – Investigators have determined that a May 28 explosion and residential structure fire on Fairway Drive in Las Cruces was accidental.

According to the Las Cruces Fire Department, investigators with the department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives determined the explosion originated inside the trunk of a vehicle parked in the garage of the home.

Investigators determined that an acetylene cylinder stored inside the trunk was the fuel source for the explosion. The ignition source could not be conclusively determined.

Authorities said the acetylene cylinder had reportedly been borrowed and was being temporarily stored inside the vehicle. Evidence indicates the victim was inside the vehicle and preparing to leave when the explosion occurred.

The victim has not yet been positively identified. The remains were transported to the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator, which is continuing its investigation and will determine the official cause and manner of death.

During the investigation, officials learned that carbon monoxide alarms inside the garage had reportedly activated earlier that morning. Investigators said certain combustible gases may cause some carbon monoxide alarms to activate. While investigators could not determine whether the alarm activations were directly related to an acetylene leak, residents are reminded that unexpected alarm activations should always be taken seriously and investigated promptly.

Acetylene is a highly flammable gas commonly used for welding and cutting operations. Officials said compressed gas cylinders should be stored and transported according to manufacturer recommendations and industry safety standards. Acetylene cylinders should be secured upright, stored in well-ventilated areas and kept away from heat and ignition sources.

Officials also warned that cylinders should never be stored inside enclosed vehicles or other confined spaces where leaking gas can accumulate and create an explosive atmosphere.

Neighboring residents who were temporarily displaced by the incident have since been allowed to return to their homes.

The investigation remains open pending completion of the Medical Investigator’s report, though officials said the cause of the explosion and fire has been determined to be accidental.
