DEMING / LAS CRUCES – Families in southern New Mexico and the Borderland have an opportunity to save money on back-to-school shopping as both New Mexico and Texas hold their annual tax-free shopping weekends over the next several days.
New Mexico’s annual Gross Receipts Tax Holiday begins today, Friday, July 31, and continues through Sunday, August 2. During the three-day event, qualifying clothing, shoes, school supplies, computers and computer equipment may be purchased without paying state gross receipts tax.
In New Mexico, qualifying items include:
- Clothing and shoes priced under $100 per item.
- School supplies priced at $30 or less per item.
- Computers priced at $1,000 or less.
- Computer equipment, including monitors and printers, priced at $500 or less.
For many residents of Deming and Las Cruces, shopping across the state line is also an option.
Texas’ annual Sales Tax Holiday will take place Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 9. During the three-day event, shoppers can purchase qualifying clothing, footwear, backpacks and many school supplies priced at less than $100 per item without paying state or local sales taxes. Unlike New Mexico, Texas generally does not include computers in its traditional back-to-school tax holiday.
For Borderland shoppers, the different dates provide an added benefit. Those looking to purchase computers may find greater savings this weekend in New Mexico, while shoppers planning to buy clothing, shoes and school supplies will also have another opportunity next weekend by visiting retailers in El Paso during the Texas tax-free holiday.
State officials encourage shoppers to review the list of qualifying items before making purchases, as certain price limits and exclusions apply in both states. Online purchases may also qualify for the tax exemptions if they meet each state’s requirements.
