LAS CRUCES – The Officer-Involved Incident Task Force is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday afternoon during an ongoing narcotics investigation in Las Cruces.
According to a news release issued April 24th, Metro Narcotics agents had been conducting surveillance on a subject as part of the investigation. The subject was located in the 2300 block of Lohman Avenue near McDonald’s at approximately 2:00 p.m., where agents attempted to make contact. Authorities report that shots were fired during that interaction.
The suspect, identified only as a 45-year-old male, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Investigators say a firearm in the suspect’s possession was recovered.
No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
Officials state that the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. Las Cruces police anticipate holding a news conference once additional information is confirmed and witness interviews have been completed.
The Officer-Involved Incident Task Force includes investigators from the New Mexico State Police, the Las Cruces Police Department, the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office, and New Mexico State University Police. The task force is responsible for gathering facts in the case and presenting those findings to the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office for review.
