TAOS – New Mexico State Police have identified human remains found in the Carson National Forest as missing Taos woman Melissa Casias.

State Police said investigators were notified May 28th that a hiker had discovered human remains in the McGaffey Ridge area. Investigators also learned that a handgun was found alongside the remains.

The Office of the Medical Investigator has positively identified the remains as Casias. The cause and manner of death have not yet been determined, and the remains will undergo further anthropological examination.

Casias was reported missing June 26th, 2025, after she failed to arrive at work and did not return home after visiting her daughter at work. Family members later found that her purse, identification and cell phones had been left behind, prompting concern for her welfare and a missing person investigation.

State Police said the investigation remains active and ongoing.

The agency extended condolences to the Casias and Mondragon families.
