LAS CRUCES – Multiple southern New Mexico emergency response agencies worked together Sunday to rescue an injured hiker from the Organ Mountains after the individual suffered a broken ankle near the summit.
According to Mesilla Valley Search and Rescue, crews responded alongside the Las Cruces Fire Department, Doña Ana County Search and Rescue, and other emergency responders on the Aguirre Springs side of the Organ Mountains.
The injured hiker was located near the top of the mountain after suffering a broken ankle. Rescue crews spent more than 12 hours carrying out the technical rescue, navigating the rugged terrain to safely bring the patient down the mountain.
The hiker was successfully transported from the trail and taken to a hospital for treatment.
Mesilla Valley Search and Rescue praised the teamwork and dedication of all agencies involved in the lengthy operation, which required significant effort to safely complete the mission.
