LAS CRUCES – The Las Cruces Fire Department’s technical rescue team responded Monday morning to assist in rescuing a person who had fallen into an abandoned mine shaft in the Organ Mountains.

According to fire officials, the call came in at approximately 10:30 a.m. after the individual fell from a rope and became trapped more than 60 feet below the surface without a way out. Authorities said the person was able to reach an area within the shaft where a cell signal was available and successfully called 911 for help.

Rescue crews, working alongside New Mexico State Police, located the shaft and established a rope rescue system to safely bring the individual back to the surface. Officials reported the person suffered rope burn injuries to the arms and hands but did not sustain any other injuries.

No firefighters were injured during the rescue operation.
