LAS CRUCES – One person was found deceased after an explosion and structure fire damaged a duplex in the 2600 block of Fairway Drive in Las Cruces.

Emergency crews responded shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday, May 28, to a report of an explosion followed by a residential structure fire. Las Cruces firefighters extinguished the fire and later located the victim inside the structure.

The victim has not yet been identified. Officials said the remains will be transported to the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator in Albuquerque for an autopsy.

The explosion and fire caused significant damage to the residence, including a partial collapse, primarily involving the roof of the garage. Two vehicles were inside the garage. The residence is part of a duplex, and the adjoining two-story residence to the west sustained smoke damage, though officials reported minimal structural damage there.

Firefighters continued searching through debris to ensure there were no additional victims. Investigators also remained on scene looking for evidence to determine the cause of the explosion and fire.

The cause remains unknown and under investigation. The Las Cruces Fire Department, Las Cruces Police Department and federal investigators, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, are involved in the investigation.

Three residents from the adjoining home were temporarily displaced and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. Nearby neighbors were also temporarily evacuated as a precaution.

A portion of Fairway Drive, between Telshor Boulevard and Don Roser Drive, will remain closed for the duration of the on-site investigation.
