LAS CRUCES – A 22-year-old man remains hospitalized in critical condition following an early-morning crash Saturday in Las Cruces.
Police and fire personnel were dispatched shortly before 2:30 a.m. September 19 to the 1600 block of East May Avenue. First responders found the driver of a 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class critically injured.
The man was initially taken to a local hospital before being transferred to University Medical Center of El Paso, where he remains in critical condition.
Las Cruces Police Department traffic investigators determined the Mercedes was traveling east on May Avenue. After crossing Nevarez Street, the vehicle drove onto the south-side sidewalk, striking a sign and mailbox. It then veered left across the roadway and collided head-on with a parked and unoccupied Ford F-350.
Both vehicles sustained major damage.
Investigators believe the Mercedes driver was not wearing a seat belt. Police said he was partially ejected through the windshield during the crash.
No other injuries were reported.
Police believe excessive speed and alcohol may have contributed to the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
