LAS CRUCES — The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday morning during a multi-agency search warrant operation in Albuquerque.
State police said FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration agents, along with task force officers from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office, were serving a search warrant at about 5 a.m. at a residence in the 12700 block of Piru Boulevard SE.
Investigators said agents announced their presence and knocked on the front door before entering the home. As officers cleared the first floor, a single gunshot was fired from the second floor, according to state police.
Two Bernalillo County sheriff’s deputies, two DEA agents and one Sandoval County sheriff’s deputy returned fire toward the source of the gunshot.
The suspect, identified by state police as 56-year-old Victor Pena, later complied with officers’ commands and was taken into custody without further incident. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
No law enforcement officers were injured.
The investigation remains ongoing. State police said it will not release the names of the deputies or agents involved and directed questions about their administrative or duty status to their respective agencies.
New Mexico State Police will document the scene, collect evidence and interview officers, subjects and witnesses before forwarding its reports and evidence to the appropriate district attorney. State police said it does not determine whether an officer’s actions were justified; that decision rests with the district attorney reviewing the investigation.
All persons mentioned are innocent until possibly found guilty by a court.
