EL PASO, TX – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Paso del Norte Port of Entry seized nearly 58 pounds of methamphetamine concealed inside a sport utility vehicle attempting to enter the United States from Mexico.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the seizure occurred June 18 at approximately 12:30 p.m. when a female U.S. citizen arrived at the international crossing in the passenger vehicle lane. During primary inspection, officers referred the vehicle for a secondary examination.
During the inspection, CBP officers discovered multiple bundles of methamphetamine hidden inside non-factory compartments within the SUV. Authorities said the total weight of the narcotics was 57.9 pounds, with an estimated street value of more than $521,000.
The vehicle and the methamphetamine were seized, and the driver was taken into federal custody. No additional information about the suspect has been released.
CBP El Paso Director of Field Operations Ray Provencio credited the successful seizure to the experience of CBP officers and the use of advanced inspection technology, saying their vigilance continues to play a critical role in protecting communities from dangerous illegal drugs.
The investigation remains ongoing.
