LAS CRUCES – Students returning to Las Cruces Public Schools this fall will be expected to follow an updated dress policy approved by the Board of Education ahead of the 2026-2027 school year.
The revised Student Dress Policy, known as JICA, was approved during the Board’s June 16 meeting and will take effect when classes begin for the new school year.
Under the updated policy, students may not wear clothing, jewelry, accessories, or other personal items that are pornographic, contain threats or obscene language or images, promote violence or illegal activity, or advertise weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or drug paraphernalia.
The policy also prohibits clothing or accessories that promote gang affiliation, hate groups, racist ideas, hate speech, or symbols targeting individuals or groups based on protected characteristics.
Students may not wear clothing that exposes undergarments, including pants or shorts worn below the waist in a way that reveals underwear. Clothing must fully cover the stomach, midriff, buttocks, and genitals with non-transparent material and may not reveal an unreasonable amount of the chest.
The updated dress code also bans slippers, house shoes, pajamas, blankets, and other attire not intended for school. Face coverings that prevent a student from being readily identified are also prohibited unless worn for approved religious, medical, or public health reasons.
Las Cruces Public Schools says the updated policy will be in effect beginning with the 2026-2027 school year.
