LAS CRUCES – Doña Ana County and all 33 New Mexico counties will see increased traffic enforcement throughout July as the New Mexico State Police conduct sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols, and driver’s license, registration, and insurance checkpoints.
The statewide effort is designed to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities caused by impaired driving while encouraging motorists to drive safely and responsibly.
According to the New Mexico State Police, the enforcement campaign combines highly visible sobriety checkpoints with saturation patrols, allowing officers to target impaired drivers while also enforcing laws related to vehicle registration, proof of insurance, and valid driver’s licenses.
State officials said the campaign is intended to increase public awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs while helping change attitudes about impaired driving.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation’s Traffic Safety Division provides overtime grant funding to local law enforcement agencies for traffic safety enforcement, training, education, and equipment in high-risk areas throughout the state. Officials say the partnership strengthens efforts to improve roadway safety and supports New Mexico’s ongoing ENDWI initiative.
