WASHINGTON, D.C. – The federal government has announced a $74 million investment intended to expand access to healthcare in rural, frontier and Tribal communities across New Mexico.
The funding is being provided through the federal Rural Health Transformation Program and will support six Regional Hub Organizations participating in Healthy Horizons, one component of New Mexico’s five-year rural healthcare strategy.
The regional organizations will work with healthcare providers and community partners to identify local needs, establish priorities and develop plans for delivering additional services closer to rural residents.
The initiative will focus on specialty care, maternal healthcare, behavioral health services, chronic-disease treatment and other medical services that can be difficult to access in rural areas.
Planned projects may include expanded in-person care, telehealth consultations, electronic consultations and remote patient monitoring. Funding may also support healthcare workforce recruitment and training, improved technology and data systems, regional partnerships and efforts to improve the long-term sustainability of rural healthcare providers.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said the investment is one portion of the broader funding awarded to New Mexico for fiscal year 2026 through the Rural Health Transformation Program.
Residents of Luna, Doña Ana and other rural counties could eventually benefit from the statewide initiative. However, federal officials have not yet identified the six Regional Hub Organizations or announced which specific hospitals, clinics or communities will receive services through the $74 million investment.
The Rural Health Transformation Program will distribute $50 billion nationally over five federal fiscal years, beginning in fiscal year 2026 and continuing through fiscal year 2030.
