MORA COUNTY — A man wounded in an August officer‑involved shooting in northern New Mexico is now charged with second‑degree murder in the death of a Mora County woman, according to Sergeant Ricardo Breceda of the New Mexico State Police.
The case began on August 16, 2026, when the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was called to review an officer‑involved shooting in District 2. At about 11:05 a.m., State Police officers responded to reports of a domestic violence incident involving a silver Ford F‑150 traveling north on State Road 518 near milepost 29. Witnesses told investigators the male suspect was assaulting the female passenger and preventing her from escaping the moving vehicle.
When officers arrived, they found the woman — identified as 34‑year‑old Amity Maes — lying motionless in the roadway. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Roughly an hour later, at 12:05 p.m., the suspect — 24‑year‑old Alejandro Vigil — returned to the area in the same truck. When officers attempted a stop, Vigil fled, prompting a pursuit involving State Police and the Mora County Sheriff’s Office. Vigil eventually stopped near milepost 27 and got out of the vehicle armed with a handgun. Investigators say he ignored repeated commands to drop the weapon and pointed the firearm toward officers. Two State Police officers fired, striking Vigil. Officers provided immediate medical aid, and Vigil was transported to a hospital for treatment.
On September 2, Vigil was discharged and booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque.
Sergeant Breceda said investigators have since amended the charges. Vigil is now accused of second‑degree murder in the death of Amity Maes, along with:
Five counts of Aggravated Assault Upon a Peace Officer (Deadly Weapon) Aggravated Fleeing a Law Enforcement Officer Receipt, Transportation or Possession of Firearms or Destructive Device by Certain Persons False Imprisonment Aggravated Battery Against a Household Member
The investigation remains ongoing.
