LAS CRUCES – Fire crews responded Tuesday evening to a propane leak in the North Sonoma Ranch area after firefighters discovered a leaking 20-pound propane cylinder inside a gas station storage locker.

According to the Las Cruces Fire Department, the first firefighters arrived just after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2026, in the 4600 block of North Sonoma Ranch Boulevard. Crews isolated the cylinder and moved it to a remote area of the parking lot to reduce the hazard while the department’s Hazardous Materials Team responded.

The Hazmat Team conducted a controlled flaring procedure, allowing the propane to safely burn off until the cylinder was fully emptied. The operation was completed in about one hour.

No injuries were reported.

The Las Cruces Fire Department reminds the public to immediately call 911 to report any suspected gas leak or hazardous materials incident.
